Changing corporate cultures: more women in leadership.

The challenge

Companies all over the world are currently implementing diverse programs to foster women's careers and to increase the number of women in leadership positions within their organizations. In Germany, however, progress has been slow. As of January 2010, the proportion of women in DAX companies (top 30 German companies traded on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange) reached only 12.5 percent in middle and a mere 3.5 percent in top management respectively. German companies' efforts to attract and retain female managers appear to have been rather ineffective: female high potentials still often opt against promotion. 

Project overview

This challenge is the point of departure for Fraunhofer's "Changing corporate cultures: more women in leadership". The initiative, funded by the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ) as part of the Federal phased plan "More women - more diversity in leadership" and run in cooperation with nine partners (see project website), seeks to explore the reasons behind so many female high potentials choosing not to pursue corporate advancement. 

The project focuses less on existing, relatively common approaches such as balancing work and family, increasing women's competence, and networking for women and more on corporate cultures as an essential factor in women's decision making. Its findings will be used to re-invent and supplement the partner companies' existing practices by means of tailored workshops.
